Pronunciation With Emma: British English Pronunciation Courses Online

Hello, I'm Emma, the founder of Pronunciation With Emma, based online but rooted in the tradition of British English teaching. I started this venture to help intermediate and advanced English learners speak with clarity, confidence, and correct British pronunciation (Received Pronunciation / Modern RP). Pronunciation With Emma offers courses, one-to-one coaching, a membership, and free resources so students can stop being misunderstood and start being heard and feel confident about their accent in English.

Teaching British English Pronunciation for Over 16 Years

I've taught English and pronunciation for over 16 years. I hold a BA Honours in English Language and Linguistics, an MSc in Education: TESOL, and a Cambridge CELTA teaching qualification.

Over those years, I’ve seen many students left frustrated: they had good vocabulary and grammar but still got asked to repeat themselves. I believe that with specific, guided pronunciation training one can bridge that gap.

From Frustrated Students to Pronunciation With Emma

Thus Pronunciation With Emma was born: to turn complex pronunciation theory into practical, usable lessons. I began by posting free pronunciation videos on Instagram and YouTube, focusing on British English sounds, stress, rhythm, and intonation. I created a free "pronunciation pack" for learners and offered short, focused lessons to grow my community.

Overcoming Two Major Teaching Challenges

Breaking Down Phonetic Intimidation

Many learners felt intimidated by phonetic transcription and "listening and repeating" without structure. To fix this, I broke down every lesson into bite-sized modules with clear practice instructions and progress checks. I also introduced regular feedback through weekly recordings and corrections rather than vague praise.

Creating Lasting Pronunciation Habits

Learners reverted to old pronunciation habits in casual speech. My solution was to create "habit reinforcement" exercises and implement spaced repetition tasks to cement improvements.

Launching Emma's Pronunciation Hub Membership

As the community grew, I launched Emma's Pronunciation Hub, a monthly membership where students get structured lessons, feedback, workshops and community support. The Hub includes:

  1. Over 100 lessons covering every British English sound
  2. Stress, intonation, and connected speech training
  3. Accent features and clarity techniques
  4. Weekly recording submissions with tailored feedback (written and/or audio)

The Marketing Channels That Drive Our Growth

YouTube Videos That Go Viral

Video content has been my biggest driver. My lesson "How to Learn English Pronunciation (Beginners) – FREE PDF" went viral and brought many new subscribers.

Instagram's 90-Second Pronunciation Drills

On Instagram I share very short pronunciation drills ("in 90 seconds or less") which attract engagement and new students to my courses.

Building Trust Through Podcasting

I share pronunciation tips, behind-the-scenes, and personal stories to build trust.

The Power of Student Referrals

Many students refer friends after seeing noticeable gains.

Four Pillars That Set Us Apart

  1. Structured Practice: I don't believe the vague advice that "listen and repeat" is enough. Every lesson is designed with clear steps, practice tasks, and guided feedback.
  2. Personal Feedback: We don't use AI scores only. Human coaches listen to your voice and point out exactly what to fix.
  3. Modern RP Approach: I teach Modern RP (with a bit of Yorkshire influence) and make it optional. I encourage learners to preserve individuality while improving intelligibility.
  4. Strong Community: In the Hub, students support each other, share recordings, ask questions, and participate in live workshops.

What I've Learnt About Building an Online Teaching Business

Content is your biggest marketing tool. If your teaching is helpful and shareable, people will bring others. Don't wait for perfect systems; launch, test, and learn. Early feedback from real learners taught me far more than planning. I also learned to prioritise retention (how to make learning stick) not just acquisition. And always give real value before asking for payment, as free resources build trust.

The Systems I Wish I'd Built Sooner

If I were starting again, I would:

  1. Build more systems around onboarding (first lessons, habit formation) from day one
  2. Integrate micro-courses (smaller paid offers) earlier to ease people into full membership
  3. Spend more time early on building email funnels
  4. Focus more on student success stories from the beginning

Expanding British English Pronunciation Training Worldwide

I plan to expand the 1:1 British English Pronunciation Programme (12-week intensive) and open more slots. I'm working on larger cohort programmes (group training) and possibly institutional licences (for universities or companies). I also want to build a mobile app for daily pronunciation drills and micro-practice. My goal is to help more non-native speakers, especially in business and academia, be understood, respected, and feel confident.

Pronunciation with Emma offers online courses, coaching, and a membership community created to help intermediate and advanced English learners improve their British English pronunciation. The goal is to help you speak with more clarity and confidence, ensuring you are understood every time you speak.

Who are these pronunciation courses for?

These courses are designed for intermediate and advanced non-native English speakers. If you have a good grasp of vocabulary and grammar but find people still ask you to repeat yourself, this structured pronunciation training can help you bridge that gap and feel more confident in your accent.

What makes these British English courses different?

Instead of just asking you to 'listen and repeat', the courses provide structured, practical lessons with clear steps and progress checks. You receive personal feedback from human coaches, not just AI, on your weekly recordings. The focus is on building lasting habits through specific exercises and community support.

What is Modern RP and do I have to learn it?

Modern Received Pronunciation (RP) is the type of standard British accent taught in the courses. However, learning it is optional. The programme encourages you to improve your clarity and intelligibility while preserving your unique accent and individuality.
