Andrew Middleton: Life Coaching & Community for the Over-50s

I'm Andrew Middleton, founder of I'm Not Done Yet (INDY), a coaching and community initiative focused on life-transitions for people aged 50 and above. At I'm Not Done Yet I help individuals who are rethinking work, identity and purpose to stay relevant, redefine what "next chapter" means, and build meaningful, engaged lives.

The cliff I witnessed at 50

In my corporate and charity work I witnessed the sharp cliff many face around 50: roles change, expectations shift, and relevance can feel threatened. I founded INDY because I believe mid-life isn't a decline but an opportunity to reclaim meaning, contribute, and thrive.

Why life coaching fails the over-50s

The coaching industry either ignores the over-50s or treats aging as decline, but I noticed something essential missing: coaching that recognizes mid-life as an opportunity for reinvention and renewed purpose. Many people over 50 were experiencing a sharp cliff around 50 where roles change and relevance feels threatened, assumptions that their best years are behind them, lack of coaching specifically addressing their unique challenges and potential, no community of peers navigating similar transitions, and organizations failing to engage and retain experienced talent. I wanted to create a coaching practice that bridges these gaps, treating mid-life not as decline but as a powerful opportunity for transformation.

Building community through podcast and coaching

I began by creating a community and podcast for "INDYs" (over 50s who're not ready to slow down) to explore change, work and purpose. From there I built coaching programmes and partnerships with organisations looking to engage experienced talent, while the INDY network supported members to reinvent what they do.

My core offerings include one-to-one life coaching for over-50s, INDY podcast exploring mid-life transitions, community network for peer support, organizational consulting on engaging experienced employees, speaking engagements on mid-life reinvention, and portfolio career and retirement reimagining support.

Reaching individuals and organizations

Over time INDY reached more individuals and organisations focused on mid-life transitions, portfolio careers, retirement reimagined and purposeful work. I support private coaching, speak publicly and work with companies to better engage experienced employees.

Four pillars of my mid-life coaching approach

  1. Mid-Life Focus: I work explicitly with people aged 50 to 70, acknowledging their challenges and potential.
  2. Purpose Plus Strategy: It's not just about change, but aligning deeper values with action.
  3. Individual and Organisational: I help individuals and also consult with businesses on how to engage and retain experienced talent.
  4. Community-Driven: The INDY network enables peer support, connection and shared possibilities for life after 50.

Five marketing strategies that built my community

  1. INDY podcast: Regular content exploring mid-life transitions and purpose.
  2. Community building: Network of over-50s supporting each other through change.
  3. Speaking engagements: Public talks on mid-life reinvention and experienced talent.
  4. Dual audience approach: Serving both individuals and organizations.
  5. Clear positioning: Explicitly focusing on 50-70 age group rather than generic life coaching.

Five essential lessons for navigating mid-life change

  1. Don't assume your best years are behind you: You may be entering a new phase of influence.
  2. Be intentional about your next steps: Ask "What do I want to do differently?" and "Who do I want to become?"
  3. Build a network of peers and mentors: Change is easier when you don't walk it alone.
  4. Align your choices to your values, not just to available roles:
  5. Keep learning and evolving: Experience counts, but adaptation matters.

What I'd change if I started over

If I were starting again, I would invest more in digital training and community tools early to reach more people from the start, capture more member stories to demonstrate transformation and build visibility sooner, build organizational partnerships faster to connect with companies earlier, and create scalable resources sooner with templates and frameworks for self-guided work.

Where I'm taking I'm Not Done Yet next

Looking ahead I will deepen coaching offers, expand the INDY community globally and create more resources for organisations and individuals exploring "what next" after mid-life. My vision is that when someone over 50 asks "What's next for me?", they think of I'm Not Done Yet first.
